Episode 1 – I hate knitting! (Not really)

Welcome all listeners! Today you meet sisters Melanie and Deborah. We discuss the 2009 World Wide Knit in Public day in Buenos Aires, and take a look at the poem What Happened to Lazy Charlotte from Heinrich Hoffman’s book Slovenly Betsy.

We are looking forward to the Olds College Fibre Week 2009 (in Alberta, Canada), and the upcoming re-release of Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting.

Knitting is even pervasive in music. Enjoy these tunes:
Ordinary Day – Great Big Sea (with thanks to the Podsafe Music Network)
Doozer Knitting Song – Fraggle Rock, episode “The Great Radish Famine”
The Knitting Song – “I’m going to knit myself a sweater” – Sophie Madeleine
Allegro, il Penseroso ed il – Moderato by Handel
Air Vif – Written by Poulenc, sung by Melanie Gall
Pardon me, I didn’t knit that for you – Sung by Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne of Mason Dixon Knitting

I found this by accident and listened to it, just to see what it was all about. It was witty and funny, and I enjoyed every minute of it! How did you find so many songs about knitting? I used to knit when I was younger, and still keep the needles around, just in case. I look forward to the next webisode!

I hate knitting too! Er, I mean I love it! Er, I don’t even know anymore! I don’t know which savvy girl I like best, but I can relate with them both! I am totally a closet knitter. Like, I knit on the subway, but if I see anyone I know I just stuff it in my knapsack and pretend I’m sleeping. My most recent project is a scarf. Actually all I know how to make are scarves, but they are good – useful and cute. Maybe you can suggest a project that is good for a scarf-knitter? That isn’t a scarf, I mean. Oh, and about the second episode? My brither in law was visiting and he left the toilet seat up and in the middle of the night got up to pee and…splash. THAt was the wackest thing that happened to me once this year. The year ott 9! ;)

Splash?!? Ugh. That is something that I would try to forget!

A scarf-knitter, eh? There are some very simple sweater, shawl and bag patterns out there. I would suggest that you check out the website http://www.knitty.com – if you click on ‘archives’ you can see all the previous patterns that they have published. Pick someting that is rated ‘mellow’ and give it a try!

    Here’s my knitting comment…

In the old days (100 years ago), when things were done by hand, people sang songs while they knitted, while they spun yarn, and even when they sheared the wool from the sheep for the yarn.

Here’s a shearing song from Australia:

Deborah, you do not mention carting. Is the wool carted before you tried spinning? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhQcadvDO0o
